Coyle Officially Says No to Celtic!

Coyle Officially Says No to Celtic!

Owen Coyle will be staying as the manager at Burnley after strong links in the media this week suggested he would be joining Celtic, the club he supported as a child.

Coyle was reported to be the first-choice replacement for Gordon Strachan and indeed some in the media were suggesting he would be Celtic's manager by the end of the week despite Burnley FC stating that no official approach had been made.

It looks like the Clarets gaffer has now spurned the SPL and prefers instead to lead a team in the top league in Europe following Burnley's promotion to the Premier League.

Last night on the Official Burnley website Coyle said:

'There has been no approach to Burnley Football Club.It is people simply putting two and two together and making five.I am going on holiday with my family this weekend and I can assure you I will be doing so as Burnley manager.'

Thank you God/Owen!! This seems a logical decision to me and I am glad for once money has not tempted a manager out of his contract.

The Daily Mirror today believes Coyle could have quadrupled his wages with a move to Glasgow but is also stating that he is set to be soon rewarded with a massive pay rise at Turf Moor. So he should after what he has done for this club!

Update:

Owen Coyle has now gone one stage further today and said on the Official Burnley Site:

"All I would say is the same I have said from day one; I am fully committed to the job in hand at Burnley Football Club.We have an unbelievable adventure ahead of us and we want to make sure that when the season kicks off we do our ultimate to stay in the best division in the world.I am so excited at the challenge and prospect of pitting our Burnley side against the best."

Excellent news although I suppose technically it could all kick off again after he returns from holiday. Doesn't sound like it though, especially if Burnley FC are going to give him extra dosh!

Also this quote from Kilby: "We have received no approach from Celtic for Owen. If Celtic approach me today, tomorrow or the day after that, I will turn them down. If Owen was sat here opposite me right now, I would say to him that this is a fabulous stage and that he has to try out his skills in the biggest league in the world. He has a big career in front of him and a big opportunity to try his hand against the very best the Premier League has to offer. There is no clause in his contract that allows Owen to walk away. He has another two years remaining on his present deal and we have already had discussions on a new one. We have a job to do in the Premier League and so far as I am concerned Owen will be here doing that job next season whether Celtic call me or not." [Edited by turfmanphil]

What evidence does the Daily Mirror have to go making up stories about quadrupling wages? Almost certainly none. Doubtless they'll claim they have inside and confidential sources... which means it comes from inside their own heads and they're covering up the complete lack of substance in the nonsense they have printed. As a group of fans, now we are in the big leagues, we are going to have to get used to silly speculation from people trying to keep their struggling newspapers afloat, and toughen up. Up the Clarets!

Agree with that CP. Looks like the initial onslaught has been pushed back but this will happen again in the future I'm sure. We have moved into the big playground now and need to be prepared to play tough. Owen wouldn't have bettered himself, in my opinion, by moving to Celtic but there will be other clubs interested in him in future where money and success might prove a temptation. For now, he is with us so we should just enjoy the ride.

If you want to get a taste of the Scottish media frenzy that all the Coyle for Celtic rumours came out of, I suspect that you could do worse than read these two BBC Sport blogs: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/chickyoung/2009/05/the_managerial_merrygoround_sp.html and http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/chrisjardine/2009/05/coyle_should_stay_to_lead_burn.html

Looking good but OC needs a new deal which rewards his achievements and protects the club against inevitable attempts to prise him away. I'm sure BK will do the business. Happy holidays Owen!

Just seen OC on Sky Sports News. Didn't really say that he wasn't going to Celtic but he didn't say that he was either. He kept saying that there had been no official approach so any talk was hypothetical. Looks like he's off on holiday tomorrow. Suspect Mrs Coyle might have to put up with him taking a few calls from time to time.
