Rumour Mill-Jermaine Beckford

The 25 year old star striker at Leeds United,Jermaine Beckford has rejected a new three year contract extension at Elland Road forcing the club to invite offers from other clubs before his current contract expires in 12 months time.

Speculation in the media has been rife with a whole host of clubs linked with League 1's top goal scorer. The striker has put away 34 goals this season but Leeds United of course failed to gain promotion after losing out to Millwall in the League One Play-Offs Semi-Final.

The Yorkshire Post today suggests that Middlesbrough and Coventry City are among the main clubs expected to put in bids for the impressive striker.

However a number of other clubs including Burnley have been linked with the player.

Newcastle United, Sunderland and QPR are other clubs reported to be interested.

With the Clarets recent promotion via Wembley to the Premier League, if the rumour is true one wonders whether Beckford could jump two leagues and play in the top flight. All of the clubs reported to be interested except for Burnley and Sunderland play in the Championship.

If Beckford is considered good enough to play at the top level then the recently relegated Premier League sides, Newcastle and Middlesbrough plus the current Championship sides Coventry and QPR could be at a disadvantage.

Well something that is going to be exciting this pre-season will be the Summer transfer window more so this time with promotion to the top flight and more money to burn!

Firstly well done on your promotion, you had a fantastic season. I don't think Beckford can play at the highest level, he will get eaten alive by defenders in the Premiership and I think you need players who are willing to fight and scrap for everything next season. He can be very lazy, doesn't like chasing back or defending from the front. Leeds have played to his strength's the last few seasons and allowed him to get away with that side of the game because he did know how to find the back of the net. He will be an average Championship player, when ever he's needed to turn up for the big game he's disappeared. Good luck in the Premiership.

Cheers dazza, that would be my gut feeling too about Beckford. Building for the Prem is a difficult call, not sure I want old heads with Prem experience on their way out nor players from lower leagues with a lot to prove at the top level! Will be interesting to see what sort of players Coyle plumps for assuming we can keep him. Bet quite a few are Scottish!

I'd rather have Beck-ham.

Id like to second what Dazza said and say congrats and hope you have a good season in the prem and stay up! I bet you cant wait to play Blackburn and Bolton in your local derby not to mention the big clubs. I dont feel Beckford is good enbough for the premiership. He has pace to offer but I think he would struggle at that level. I feel Championship is definitly his level at most. Good luck anyway

Interesting what the Leeds boys are saying generally and consistently about this! Thanks for the best wishes Brig. I was hoping that Leeds would come up this season but mainly because if we hadn't gone up, we would really need these relatively local games on a financial basis! Hope you manage it next season though

Congrats on promotion and hope you stay up, like Brig and Daz he's not ready for tat level yet.

agree with general consensus - A striker would at least need to be proven at Championship level or higher.
