Clarets Win Another Award

Burnley have another accolade after picking up the F&C Performance of the Week award for the superb performance in the 2-0 play off semi final victory at Reading this week.

The panel that decide these awards include Sir Alex Ferguson in addition to Howard Wilkinson, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry and Joe Royle.

Owen Coyle will receive the award this Friday and it will be the second time the club have ben honoured this season.

The gaffer was presented with an engraved crystal football following the Carling Cup win at Chelsea in November.

Reserves Presented with totesport.com Trophy

The Clarets second-string team, which has included a number of youth players this season won the totesport.com Central League West Division and the new Champions were presented with their trophy at half-time recently during the Bristol City game at Turf Moor. They finished with 37 points from 17 games with Manchester City their closest rivals on 31 points.

Youth Team Narrowly Miss Out on Being Puma Youth Alliance Champions

The Clarets youth team just missed out on the Puma Youth Alliance trophy coming second to Champions, Wrexham. The Welsh side with 64 points finished just four points ahead of the Clarets.

Burnley X-Files

Here are a few of our former players that have left their clubs recently or who have been in the news for other reasons.

Rhys Williams Down Under

Our on-loan defender from Middlesbrough recently returned to Teeside after Owen Coyle failed to get an extension to his emergency loan. This meant he would be unable to take part in the Clarets play-offs campaign and his last game for the club was the final fixture of 2008/9 at home to Bristol City. We did of course report the situation but Clarets fans might be interested to know that Rhys now looks likely to become an Australian International turning his back on Wales. He had represented the Welsh at Under 21 level but being Australian born he does have the option to play for the full Australian National side.

Williams was born in Perth, Western Australia and he has now applied to Fifa to be allowed to switch his allegiance.

The defender had played 10 times for Wales Under-21 but although called up several times for the seniors, he had still not won his full cap.

Because of his parental situation he could have chosen to play for one of four National sides. In addition to Wales and Australia, he could also have opted to be considered for England (father) or India (mother)

Rhys had to make any decision over a change of country before he turned 21 this July. Australian coach Pim Verbeek made a special trip to the UK last month and following discussions the 20 year old has now opted to play for the country of his birth.

Frank Sinclair

Lincoln City boss Peter Jackson has released seven of his players, one of them being former Clarets defender, Frank Sinclair now 37.

Gareth Taylor

Former Clarets striker, Gareth Taylor(2001-2003) initially signed for Doncaster Rovers on loan from Tranmere in January 2008 and the deal was made permanent in February that year. He had a month-long loan spell this season before returning to the Keepmoat. He returned to Doncaster at the end of this season, but was released from his contract last week (7th May). The Welsh International is now 36 and it will be interesting to see if he will still be playing professional football next season.

The Chesterfield Manager Role

Former Clarets players David Reeves (loan in 1987) and Steve Blatherwick (1997-98) have confirmed they are interested in taking over the manager's role from Lee Richardson at Saltergate. Chesterfield are without a manager after opting not to renew Richardson's contract last week.

The duo who have also played for Chesterfield during their career are currently on the coaching staff at Blue Square North side Gainsborough.

Credit to the club on another award that's some panel by the way,i so the article on Rhys this morning and thought that's a hell of a difference in traveling time ;-) any news on our loaned out players i would presume they are back with us and training?

I think Coyle said in an interview they were back but stood no chance of featuring in play-offs.Waiting to hear more

Kiraly, Van der Schaaf, Berisha, Jones, Mahon, Kay..who will go and who will stay? I'd keep Kay as long term prospect. How can anyone decide about Berisha and Van der Schaaf they have hardly played for us? Rest I reckon will go and they all might except Kay if we get promoted
turfmanphil
Van Der Schaaf seems the strangest one to me OC brought him in but we never really got to see him play? of the others Kay will stay and agreed the others will go, shame about Berisha Though!!
8clarets8
Agree about Van der Schaaf. He along with Berisha seem to have been banished simply because they were out with injuries/illness so long, no room could be found for them. Then again they simply might not be good enough but as you say Coyle was the one that signed VdS. The only other explanation is that they have had a row
