Clarets Players Dominate Actim Index 2008/9

Clarets Players Dominate Actim Index 2008/9

The Actim Index is the official player rating system of the English Premier League and Coca-Cola Championship. It was introduced for the 2004/05 season and was devised by statisticians at the University of Salford in partnership with PA Sport.

The 2006/07 season saw the Actim Index enhanced by the addition of assists and clean sheets to the factors that are taken into account.

Now that the season has been completed in terms of the 2008/9 fixture list, it is remarkable to find out that the Clarets have 9 players in the Championship Top 100 and have one player in the Top 5 of each of the Goalkeepers, Defenders, Midfielders and Strikers sections. Graham Alexander was the top defender in the Championship!

This is even more remarkable when you consider we have had a small squad. The number of players that have played more than a handful of games this season equates to 16 players so well over 50% of them have made the Index.

These are the ratings for the Clarets players in the Top 100 Actim Index

Graham Alexander 6th

Martin Paterson 9th

Brian Jensen 12th

Wade Elliott 14th

Chris Eagles 24th

Robbie Blake 36th

Steven Caldwell 61st

Clarke Carlisle 69th

Chris McCann 83rd

In terms of the Top 5 categories

Goalkeepers: Jensen was 3rd

Defenders: Alexander was 1st

Midfielders: Wade Elliott was 4th

Strikers: Martin Paterson was 4th

Two questions. One: do you get higher up the charts if you play more? (If so, does the index favour teams with small squads?) Two: is Alexander a defender? I thought he had played most of this season in midfield! But thrilled for all of them, especially those like Alexander, Elliott and Blake who have taken on new roles this year.
