Alexander Has Hamstring Injury

Alexander Has Hamstring Injury

Scotland manager, George Burley has revealed that veteran Clarets defender Graham Alexander has picked up a hamstring injury and will miss Scotland's World Cup qualifier with Iceland at Hampden Park tonight.

Burley said yesterday:

"Unfortunately, Graham Alexander was feeling his hamstring today, so I think we can rule him out for tomorrow's game."

The 37 year old has been ever present for the Clarets this season and played for Scotland on Saturday in their 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat against Holland in the Amsterdam Arena. He was however substituted with 17 minutes of normal time still to play.

This news has come at the worst possible time for Clarets fans and for Burnley FC and we all have to hope he can recover in time to face Derby County at Pride Park this Saturday.

The Clarets currently in 5th spot are pushing hard to reach the play-offs in the last six games of this season and we need all our players fit to give us the greatest chance of succeeding.

With Ade Akinbiyi looking like he is about to join Houston Dynamo in the US and with six other players in the squad out on loan plus Russell Anderson out all season with cruciate ligament damage, we are down to an effective squad now of just nineteen players.

Losing Alexander for any of the six remaining games will be a huge blow and he will be particularly missed in the holding midfield role, a position he has made his own this season and one that has proved to be highly successful.

Things could be worse. Have you seen the news from Southampton today? We saw them in their last game of the Redknapp era, with him not present but still technically in charge, if memory serves me. (We sang: he took you down then he ****ed off home. Ade equalised.) In a few weeks we might see them in their last home game in the Championship or maybe even ever, the news looks so bad. Unmissable drama! Meantime, on the Turf, we have players who can cover for Alexander in central midfield. But cover in the back four gets thinner and thinner. Any chance of a late Anderson appearance? There was talk of it a few weeks back. And there's always the option of Wade at right back and Chris in central defence, and Joey and Kevin in central midfield. We have coped with such challenges before. It would however be a real shame for Grezza not to get through the whole season. What an amazing achievement that would be!

Doubts over Alexander for Derby game and now Rhys Williams as well, oh bloody great! -Official Site: Burnley have several injury worries as they gear up to return to Championship action at Derby County this weekend. Owen Coyle has doubts over Graham Alexander and Martin Paterson (hamstring), while Rhys Williams is battling to be fit following a calf injury. However, Steven Thompson is definitely out of the crucial trip to Pride Park. The Scottish striker still at least one week away from fitness as he continues to recover from the ankle ligament injury sustained against Nottingham Forest last month.
