Scotland manager, George Burley has revealed that veteran Clarets defender Graham Alexander has picked up a hamstring injury and will miss Scotland's World Cup qualifier with Iceland at Hampden Park tonight.
Burley said yesterday:
"Unfortunately, Graham Alexander was feeling his hamstring today, so I think we can rule him out for tomorrow's game."
The 37 year old has been ever present for the Clarets this season and played for Scotland on Saturday in their 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat against Holland in the Amsterdam Arena. He was however substituted with 17 minutes of normal time still to play.
This news has come at the worst possible time for Clarets fans and for Burnley FC and we all have to hope he can recover in time to face Derby County at Pride Park this Saturday.
The Clarets currently in 5th spot are pushing hard to reach the play-offs in the last six games of this season and we need all our players fit to give us the greatest chance of succeeding.
With Ade Akinbiyi looking like he is about to join Houston Dynamo in the US and with six other players in the squad out on loan plus Russell Anderson out all season with cruciate ligament damage, we are down to an effective squad now of just nineteen players.
Losing Alexander for any of the six remaining games will be a huge blow and he will be particularly missed in the holding midfield role, a position he has made his own this season and one that has proved to be highly successful.
