Rumour Mill-Tony McMahon

Rumours today in the Mirror suggest Owen Coyle wants to sign Middlesbrough right-back Tony McMahon.

McMahon is unable to retain a regular place in Gareth Southgate's team and being out of contract in the summer he would be able to leave Boro on a free transfer at the end of the season It is thought cash-strapped Burnley could sign him earlier for a modest fee.

The 22 year old signed for Middlebrough in 2004 and they have been his only professional club to date although he has had loan spells at both Blackpool and recently Sheffield Wednesday.

He was an Owl for most of this season making 20 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday on loan before returning to Middlesbrough in October. He has just made his first appearance of the 2008-09 season for Middlesbrough in a match against Arsenal last month.

He was captain of the Middlesbrough side that won the FA Youth Cup during the 2003-04 season. He has also represented England at under-17 and under-18 level.

So we are able to buy players on the cheap then?

Wonder if this is the one we have failed with-see Official Site:Coyle"In terms of trying to bring people in I have been busy trying to freshen things up.I was on the phone yesterday trying to sign a lad from a Premier League club.Initially we tried to get him on loan, but the club involved weren't prepared to do that. They were looking for a fee and to be fair to Brendan (Flood) he was trying to help me, but ultimately we couldn't get near"

TheSlaven from Boro's site. Good player when he's fit. You'll probably have to pay around 1.5million for him though.

We certainly need to bring in someone in defence - but hopefully it is not a case of anyone will do ( which I am sure it wont be).

TODMORDEN NEWS understands that a rejected bid for a Premier League player was that of Tony McMahon. It is also thought that talks are ongoing between Burnley and Middlesbrough.
