Ipswich Town are being linked with a move for Clarets midfielder, Alan Mahon.
Although a loan is the only possibility at this stage, it is rumoured that Jim Magilton may have in mind a permanent move for Mahon in the January window with some talk of a player swop as part of the deal.
It is also worth bearing in mind that Mahon's contract is up for renewal in the Summer so Ipswich could well have eyes on a more permanent deal.
It might make more sense to loan the player until the close season though when he would become a free agent although it is understood Ipswich are desperate to find a left sided midfielder now with a deal for Southampton`s Rudi Skácel breaking down in the summer.
If the deal goes ahead this would be the second time the former Blacburn & Wigan player has played for Ipswich.
Mahon then at Blackburn played for the Blues in late 2003 on loan. In a successful three months spell, he played nine times including eight starts also scoring one goal.
Ipswich appear to have been interested in signing him on a permanent deal back then but the cash-strapped club could not compete with Wigan who eventually signed him from Blackburn for £750,000.
The Blues were again linked to the player during his stay at Wigan but in March 2006 Steve Cotterill brought him to Burnley on loan, the deal becoming a permanent £100,000 signing in the summer of that year.
The 30-year-old even on loan at Ipswich was sidelined with injury during his three-month stay. This appears to be a trait that still inflicts the player at Turf Moor. He has had so many spells out of contention for the Clarets with injury that some harsh Burnley fans now refer to him as 'Sicknote'
This season, Alan Mahon has yet to make the starting eleven for the Clarets although he has become a regular choice on the bench and has made a number of brief appearances as substitute.
Owen Coyle has made it plain he would be keen to loan out his peripheral players to give them more match practice at a competitive level. Most Clarets fans though had in mind Steve Jones who has yet to even make the bench this season.
Would Owen Coyle want to risk depleting the squad even further by loaning out Mahon now let alone let him move permanently in the January transfer window?
Coyle however might be tempted to let Mahon go so it will be interesting to see how this one develops if the rumour is true
