Derby wont let Leacock go!

Speculation earlier in the week by the media suggested that the Clarets were willing to offer Derby £500,000 for defender Dean Leacock.

The 24 year old started his career with Fulham and after two loan spells with Coventry City joined Derby County in August 2006 for £375,000.

He plays primarily at centre back but can also play at right back although is currently being used as a defensive midfielder.

The rumour reported in the Daily Star also suggested that we faced competition from local rivals, Preston. Coventry have also been linked.

There was a suggestion later that Coyle had denied any interest but this is clearly not the case although the chances of Leacock coming to Turf Moor now look pretty remote.

Rams boss Paul Jewell told BBC Radio Derby:

'I had said if something came in that was right for us and right for him we would listen to it but circumstances in football change.

'There was an inquiry from Burnley but I don't think it's the right time.

'Leacock can play at right-back, midfield, and centre back so he's a valued member of the squad.'

It is believed the retirement of Coyle's former Bolton teammate Alan Stubbs at Pride Park could well have scuppered the possibility of a potential move

Owen Coyle speaking to the Burnley Express said:

'Leacock is a very good player, but I think with Stubbsy retiring, I would think that would curtail any interest anybody has in him, whether we were in for him or not.

'But you're never off that phone, and we'll see what comes of it.'

A little bit of clarifcation then albeit negative. Looks like this target can be scrubbed off the list

With the start that Derby have had, they will want to keep hold of their defensive players for now. Maybe we can loan him in a month unless we pay over the odds for him. Don't think we need to panic buy just yet.

We seem to have hit that lull again where Coyle cant seem to sign anybody no matter how hard he tries
