Red Devil Ben on Candid Camera

The Red Devils parachutist, known only as Ben made rather a hash of it during an intended spectacular event at Turf Moor in our first home match of 2008-9 against Ipswich.

The idea was for seven of these guys to jump out of a plane over Turf Moor and land on the pitch presenting the match ball.

Well the first few successfully landed but then it was poor Ben's turn and oh dear!!

No laughing matter really since the match was delayed by over 50 minutes while the fire brigade tried to get the poor chap down but at least he's OK apart from a few cuts & bruises.

Ipswich fans in the Cricket Field Stand ( David Fishwick) were startled by a loud crashing sound at the opposite end of the stand from where they were sitting. The eagle-eyed amongst them may have seen the falling debris come down from the roof and maybe a foot dangling through!

'He was very embarrassed when we got him down and his colleagues were waiting for him, said Burnley fire station manager Dave Jackson

'With it being Burnley's first game of the season at home the crowd weren't very happy with it being delayed.

'But they gave a big cheer when he was helped down and I'm sure it all raised a few smiles.'

Clarets fans are now placing bets as to whether the Cricket Field Stand will survive until the new Turf Redevelopment stand replaces it!

Lets face it, the blessed thing is determined to stay up despite the high winds and gales damaging the stand a couple of seasons ago and now a parachutist failing to demolish it!

I didnt know whether to laugh or cry! I thought it was a gimmick at first, until the bloody announcement came the match would be delayed for 30 minutes, then 45 , then 50!!

Could only happen at Burnley.

I think the Club have over-reacted bigtime about this incident, see their club announcement? WTF no pre-match entertainment now either inside or outside the ground? How daft is that? Sounds like they have had countless complaints. Must admit I couldnt see why they couldn't start the game on time and many around me said the same thing. Too much safety bureacracy and covering one's 'farce' I suspect
