Burnley X Files:No Dyer Straits,Dyer Saints!

Southampton winger Nathan Dyer has signed a new three-year contract for the club.

Dyer,20 had been ordered by Southampton to train on his own while he considered his future following his contract expiring in the summer. He also has a court case hanging over his head having been charged with burglary along with fellow Southampton team mate, Bradley Wright-Phillips. Both have been charged for an alleged theft from a Portsmouth night club, where the two appear to have been caught in the act on CC TV.

It is perhaps surprising therefore that Southampton have now agreed such a contract at this stage with the controversial player. Dyer will be in court today and if found guilty presumably could face a custodial sentence.

Dyer also has not played many competetive matches recently due to injury and last season featured in only 18 appearances in all competitions

'I will be working hard in training and in games to try and force my way into the side,' he told the Official Club website.

'I am delighted to have got it all resolved and to have signed. I never wanted to leave the club, it was just a question of getting it all settled.

'Now I have to try and win back my place because Bradley Wright-Phillips has been playing well on the right and scoring goals and Lee Holmes looks a very good player.

'It will not be easy but I will be working hard in training and in games to try and force my way back in.'

Nathan Dyer was signed on loan for Burnley FC by Steve Cotterill in late 2005 and he was a popular lively figure at Turf Moor in his short stay with the club. He scored two goals in five appearances for the Clarets before being recalled by Southampton.

Southampton are certainly showing faith in the lad, agreeing a contract just as the court case commences! I wasn't expecting this to be honest. Thought he had blown his chances with the club and would struggle to find another with the charge hanging over him.

I can't see him getting time in the nick, so there is little reason not to give him a contract. He does have talent and could have been a good addition for us a few years ago, but we have Wade and I expect a new left winger to come in.

Could well act in his favour too I suppose,if Saints show faith in him before knowing if he's guilty or not. Yeah you are right probably a custodial sentence would be harsh if found guilty unless he has 'previous' or summat. Mind you if everybody did get a custodial sentence for nicking stuff, we might have a fairer society and a better deterrent

Southampton winger Nathan Dyer, 20, pleaded guilty to burglary at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court. He was arrested in March after items including mobile phones and £145 in cash were taken from Bar Bluu nightclub, Southsea, on 28 February. Dyer, of Briton Street, Southampton, was given 60 hours' community service.
