'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Rumour Mill-The Nots and Maybes

The Clarets are still being connected with a number of new players with Owen Coyle stating again that he still wants to bring two new players to Turf Moor:

'I`m trying to ensure another couple of signings, but I`m not going to band names around," said Coyle

"If I am going to say who my targets are, it could alert other clubs. Once we make a signing, then we will talk about them,

"But suffice to say, we are doing our best to try and make another couple of signings."

There has however been plenty of speculation in the media concerning our targets.

Derek Riordan and Andrew Driver are still at their current clubs. The former desperate to leave Celtic, the latter suggesting he wants to remain at Hearts, backed up by recent statements by the new Hearts manager, Csaba Laszlo who has stressed 'the importance' of keeping Andrew Driver at Tynecastle.

However, with Owen Coyle currently on the Scottish tour, speculation by Clarets fans refuses to die down as they hope that maybe,Coyle being local can now pull off one if not both deals.

Chris Eagles was on everybody's lips a week or two ago after Owen Coyle announced encouraging talks had taken place to try and secure the services of the Manchester United, 22 year old winger.

The Mirror then fueled the speculation a deal was imminent this week after they reported that Eagles last Thursday had, at the last minute been taken off the plane taking Manchester United on their South African tour.

More egg on the face for the Mirror, when the day after Eagles gave an interview from South Africa saying that nothing had been decided and that he would prefer to stay with the Red Devils despite interest from a number of clubs, including some in the Premier League.

In case there was any doubt, he actually was in South Africa, he then proved it by playing in the United's Saturday match against Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town. A game that ended 1-1, with who else but Eagles scoring the goal!

Can we therefore believe the tabloids this morning who have reported that Coyle wants to bring 26 year old Latvian International striker,Gatis Kalninš to Turf Moor?

The forward signed for his current club, Skonto Rīga from FK Valmiera in 2002 and has played 16 times for his country.

One player linked to the Clarets recently, that wont be joining Burnley is Liverpool left winger Adam Hammill. It had been reported he was linked to a move to the Clarets on loan along with a number of other interested Championship sides. He has since however signed a new three-year contract with Liverpool and immediately joined Blackpool this week on a six-month loan.

Striker Kevin Lisbie also left Colchester this week after one season to join a club not too far away, Ipswich. They was some mild speculation that we might be interested in the striker but that was hit for six when Lisbie said he had no intention to move North preferring to stay in the South (Well East actually!)

Another player we were loosely connected with at one time but many weeks ago now was Bristol City striker, Darren Byfield. He's now definitely out of the equation with Doncaster Rovers signing him this week on a two-year deal.

Hartlepool also recently completed the signing of midfielder Ritchie Jones on a free transfer. 21-year-old, Jones was released by the Premier League champions, Manchester United at the end of last season. Owen Coyle gave the youngster a trial back in January 2008, so it was natural that there would still be speculation we could still be interested in him. If we were, we were unsucessful although the fact he signed for a League 1 side, suggests we did not offer this time round.

Oh well maybe we will know soon, who Coyle has in mind as the new season gets ever nearer but at least we know now some who wont be coming.
