Eagles speaks from....SOUTH AFRICA!

Manchester United are currently on tour in South Africa and Chris Eagles, the winger strongly linked with a move to Burnley was included in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad for the tour.

However the Daily Mirror reported yesterday that Eagles was taken off the flight to Cape Town on Thursday at the last minute suggesting he was about instead to finalise terms with Burnley FC.

The Manchester United Official Site today however confirm Eagles is indeed currently in South Africa with the Red Devils and provide some comments he made yesterday to MUTV in Cape Town. The player confirmed he has had talks with other clubs about a possible transfer but insisted he would prefer to stay at Old Trafford.

"I`d love to stay at Old Trafford and make my career as a United player," Eagles told MUTV in Cape Town, "but I need to think about playing regularly.

"There have been talks with Premier League and Championship clubs, but nothing`s been decided."

Eagles also said he would be seeking advice from United manager Sir Alex Ferguson during the tour in an effort to evaluate his future.

"It`s difficult because I want to play every week, whether I leave United or stay at United. If I think I`m going to get a chance here then I`d love to stay. If not, maybe I have to look somewhere else.

"I`ll speak to the gaffer over the next week or so and see what happens. There are all sorts of options available."

Quite clearly this will dampen speculation that the Clarets are close to signing the 22 year-old. The suggestion that Premier League clubs might also be interested in the player shows the competition we appear to face.

We look to be a million miles away from signing this player and even if we do there will be little time to bed him in before the season starts. I think Coyle should have been less forthcoming in his original comments which seem to have fuelled the media into a ridiculous frenzy

Ferguson praised Eagles, whose first-team chances at Old Trafford have been limited and who has recently been linked with a move to Burnley. “Chris has a lot of ability, which is important at our club, and he’s still young,” the Reds boss said. “He’s maturing and we’ll see how he does in the rest of the tournament.”
