Clarets sign Van Der Schaaf

BURNLEY have this afternoon snapped up Dutch midfielder Remco van der Schaaf from under the noses of Cardiff City and others.

Van der Schaaf was the former captain of Vitesse Arnhem and played 29 games for them last season scoring three goals. A popular player with the fans, he was however out of contract in the summer and couldn't agree terms.

A former PSV Eindhoven player under Guus Hiddink, the 29 year old was also reported to be on the verge of signing for Cardiff until talks broke down.

Vital Cardiff reported last week that he had turned them down over Contractual terms with the stumbling block being salary and length of contract. Cardiff would appear to have only offered him a one year deal.

The Clarets offered the former Dutch Under-21 International, a three year deal and of course he arrives on a free transfer after being out of contract with his previous club.

Cardiff manager, Dave Jones at the weekend mentioned the Clarets in an interview with the Western Mail.

"Go back 12 months and compare Cardiff City to a club like Burnley," he said. Given a choice between the two, any potential signing would have gone to Burnley and I couldn't have blamed him.

"But these days I have the tools to show a player around the training ground and I can actually show him the new stadium.

"I can say, 'There you go' and tell him there is lot more to come. Today, the player is more likely to choose Cardiff."

Hahaha-How ironic!!

Van der Schaaf has been given the Number 26 shirt. We will bring you Owen Coyle's comments on his fifth new signing of the summer as soon as they are available

Get in. I believe this lad will really help hold the new look squad together. Enough experience to bring to a vital part of the team. This could turn out to be our best signing so far and I am more than happy with our previous ones. Apparently we have a big offer in for another player.

cant believe he turned us down for yal... damn dutch

Probably length of contract attwooll9, we offered three-years compared to Cardiff's one! For a 29 year old, 3 is far more security and we too are investing in our ground re a £30 million re-development of Turf Moor. Things seem to be on the up!

This will shut Dave Jones up after his ramblings in the local press down here. Unlucky. The Arnhem fans say he is a bit of a tiger with plenty of aggression. Just what we have needed since Kevin Ball.
