Burnley X-Files: McGreal Ipswich Reserves Coach?

John McGreal joined the Clarets in the summer of 2004 from Ipswich during Steve Cotterill's first season in charge.

He spent three impressive seasons with the Clarets before injuries began to take their toll.

It was Cotterill who released John McGreal in May 2007. He was linked with Colchester, but after a trial, failed to win a contract. That was really the last time, the Clarets heard of their former defender other than to hear that he retired as a professional footballer.

News today links, John now 36 with a return to Ipswich, a club he played for between 1999-2004 after signing from Tranmere in a £650,000 move.

This time however, the rumour is he will be offered the role of reserve team coach (replacing Steve Greaves) after McGreal recently attained his UEFA B Licence at Keele University and was occasionally involved in coaching sessions at Portman Road last season,

The Liverpool born McGreal is a former team-mate of Ipswich boss Jim Magilton having played together during his spell at Portman Road the first time round.

Good luck,John.

Good news for John if the rumour is true. Always liked him when he played for us, good solid defender and he brought on the likes of Duff and Cahill

Yeah, I read that in the EADT this morning (the Ipswich local paper). It would seem that Jim is going on a mass firing and hiring spree this summer, as this is about the fifth position looking to change hands at Ipswich. I'm not sure yet if it is for the better, or if it is for the worst, but all I can say, is JMG would be a very good candidate.
