'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Its only One Penny!

Everybody expected our new keeper, Diego Penny would be named our Number 1 ahead of Jensen & Kiraly but Coyle was being coy about the possibility a few days ago.

'You come in with a level playing field. The bottom line is if you get that jersey it's up to you to make sure you maintain it.

'There'll be real competition for places. We want real competition and strength in depth and we're doing our utmost to make sure that happens.'

Well if wearing the Number 1 jersey means you are the first choice keeper then Penny has achieved both since the Official site has now confirmed Penny will wear the Number 1 shirt.

This presumably means Jensen will retain his favoured Number 12 jersey and the unlucky, effectively transfer-listed Kiraly will have to await news of his new number if he is still a Clarets player come August 9th when the new season kicks off. (Number 13 still comes to mind for the unlucky keeper who drew the short straw!)

Owen Coyle has also been speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph on the circumstances behind the signing whilst revealing he was down to go to the Masters but couldn't when there was business to be done!

"We are obviously delighted to sign Diego. He said it`s always been his desire to play in English football and he turned down other offers from other European clubs to come here and play.

"We were alerted to him in January, but there`s nothing done in a week. We done a full background check on him and sent a scout out there twice to check him out thoroughly.

"I think he`ll be a tremendous addition to the football club.

"I was supposed to be heading out to Hong Kong to play in a Masters tournament in May, but I scrapped that to fly to Madrid to speak to Diego. If we hadn`t done that, then I think there`s a chance we would`ve missed out on him altogether."

No surprises really. Odd that the Official site have now snook the Number One bit in their Penny appeal victory article.

Sounds a quality 'keeper, and I have always loved the South American game.

We certainly need one after the spills Jensen & Kiraly made last season! I reckon they may have cost us a play-offs spot alone. Jenson though is not a quitter, Ill give him that and after securing a two year contract will be breathing down Penny's neck! He has already seen off Coyne, Pollitt & now Kiraly!!

I thought that Kiraly had a good season last year? At least, he played pretty well against Ipswich on a couple of occasions I seem to remember. Even, at Portman Road, he frustrated the life out of us as the teams played out a boring 0-0 draw!

Just too inconsistent mate, yep both he & Jensen can save the day but some of the spills were dreadful & cost us dear
turfmanphil
kiraly had a few good games but was really inconsistant and had more awful games than good ones.

Totally agree Tom, sensed he did better for Palace than us
