James O'Connor becomes an Owl

The Owls have made their first signing of the season and it's a familiar face, our former midfielder James O'Connor.

Ginge could not sort out a new contract this summer and was told he could leave by Owen Coyle.

O'Connor had been strongly linked with a move to Hillsborough although in recent weeks nothing seemed to be happening as though the deal may have fallen through.

Sheffield Wednesday will now however get the player for free on a Bosman.

It is understood he has signed a three-year deal at Hillsborough after spending four years at Turf Moor.

Wednesday gaffer,Brian Laws said of his new signing:

"I am delighted to have secured James. He is a proven player at Championship level and brings a wealth of experience.

"James will bring an excellent work-rate, great attitude, and numerous other qualities to our squad."

The irony is he could be playing against his former club on the opening game of the new season with the Clarets travelling to Hillsborough on the 9th August.

Good luck to Ginge, but not on the 9th August!! I always liked him and thought he put in a lot of effort. He had his critics but I thought that criticism was misplaced and ungracious.

can he compete phil we have signed him in the hope he can fill a massive void in our squad sure I know he has experience but to be honest I along with loads of other wednesday fans have no idea what type of player he is
BIG TONY
He will give you 100% and his motivation and energy is high. He can also pose a threat on goal given the chance. His weakness is that he can easily be knocked off the ball in the challenge IMO but he makes up for it in other ways. A good, reliable squad player, not spectacular but consistent

thanks for thatturfmanphil. I agree with Big Tony us owls fans have no idea what to expect from this lad, just know that our midfield has been not great for a while, botched up with loan signings, the expectations to aquire a midfield that can cause an impact and provide our strikers with chances is what the fans need this season. Hope hes the man for the job. Sounds like he was highly respected by all burnley fans though. Gotta say hes got a hell of a debut game hasnt he lol.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire? lol Will be interesting to see how well he does for you

I guess the question I could ask you that would some all this is is... Is he kinda player you think you will miss him in your squad next season ? Cheers mate.
stevetheowl
I will miss him in the squad personally but I know many Clarets that wont. To me he was a solid squad player without being spectacular. He may have struggled to get in the starting eleven now we have McDonald and maybe other, more high profile midfielders to come but I think he will do well for you

Cheers Turfmanphil, youve been most helpfull. Good luck to Burnley for next season ( apart from on the first league game he he he ). May the best team win.

I was hopeing to see him join ex manager Sean O'Driscoll at Donny.

You got the right O'Connor there Dazza? Garreth not James was the one who played for Bournemouth? GOC was released this Summer and was linked to Donny but so far onlu Spicer has been signed
turfmanphil
I would rather had him stay another season, but he would not have started. We don't have strength in depth and he would have give us some of that. Energetic box to box player. Generally plays the simple ball and is not afraid to get stuck in, but like TMP says he is knocked of the ball easily. Gives it everything for 90 mins and will be a good addition for you.
