Rumour Mill-Rangers' Gow plus £2.5m for Laffs

Rumour Mill-Rangers' Gow plus £2.5m for Laffs

Rangers according to the Daily Mail have tempted Burnley with a £2.5m offer for Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty which includes midfielder, Alan Gow in a player-cash deal.

The offer matches a similar one understood to have been made by Wolves with Stephen Elliott going the other way.

Alan Gow is a 25-year old Glaswegian. The attacking midfielder has played all his professional career to date for Scottish clubs. He started with Clydebank and then had spells with Airdrie United and Falkirk (pictured in their kit above) before moving to Rangers in the Summer of 2007 via a pre-contract agreement after trying to secure the player in the January window of that year. He signed a three year contract with the Glasgow club

It will be interesting to see if the club are tempted by any of these offers in a week which seemingly saw Operational Director, Brendan Flood offer an olive branch to the Northern Ireland International striker following his unfortunate comments to the Belfast Telegraph at the end of May.

'Lafferty is a young fellow who probably hasn't thought about it as much as he could have done,' Flood said.

'There's always pressure on desirable players, because there's an army of agents out there talking to them about what money they might get elsewhere. They want to listen, they want to pressure the club to do better deals for themselves. That's football today unfortunately. We would like him to be playing up front and hopefully sticking a few in.

'I don't think we've given up hope of him staying, but it's certainly made us think more about whether he is in the squad next year. Realistically, what he said has forced us to consider it a bit. We are trying to get the best team to get us out of the Championship and there might be better players around.

'Every one of our players might not be the best player for that position, so we've got to be objective about how to be successful. If Owen can get better players he will do.'

My own personal view is that we should now cash in on Lafferty and as soon as possible, so we can build the squad even more before the end of the transfer window.

The worst possible scenario would be to sell Lafferty a week or two before the new season, when we would not be able to find a replacement in time before the window shut and would be another one man down in the squad.

Lafferty, has blown it in my opinion by his statements to the press and he is unlikely to be accepted in a Clarets shirt again by a significant number of Clarets fans, some of whom may well become vocal at the games chanting their disapproval and booing the player. This could easily undermine the player's confidence and our team's chances of success. I would never boo a player, any player wearing the Clarets shirt, no matter what they did, but there are plenty who would no matter how much it might effect team spirit and our chances of getting three points.

I do wish this sorry saga would come to an end soon though and we can move on to other things and look forward to the new players hopefully signing for the Clarets.

Getting fed up of the Laffs saga now, let's go for one of these player-cash deals

Reading all the comments about Gow from Rangers fans is pretty exciting. They all seem to feel that if he had been given a chance he would be a real star for them. They do however say that he is going to Hearts. If we do sell, then we do need to do it with a player exchange.

Owen Coyle must have played with him too at Airdrie He was there as a player 2003-5 and Gow 2002-5!! [Edited by turfmanphil]

Don't get excited about Alan Gow. He scored 13 goals in 70 games for Falkirk. He couldn't break into a Rangers side that boasted *****-poor strikers suh as Jean Claude Darcheville & Nacho Novo. He's worth about £200,000. If you fall for the million price tag then you must be mugs. You'd be better paying a million for Derek Riordan from Celtic. 54 goals in 123 games for Hibs; the only reason he doesn't play for Celtic is that he fell out of favour with the manager.

We might sidestep both Rangers & Celtic and go with the latest Wolves offer of £2.25m plus two players (Elliott/Potter). I cant be arsed where Laffs ends up but his career would probably be best served at Wolves rather than rotting away in the Old Firm reserves
