Rumour Mill-Paterson Bid Rejected

Yesterday's paper gossip reported that the Clarets were interested in Scunthorpe's 21 year old striker, Martin Paterson but suggested a bid had not been placed despite a figure of £400,000 being rumoured.

The Daily Star today suggest that we have bid such an amount of money for the Northern Ireland International but that the bid has been rejected.

If this is true it perhaps comes as no surprise since the Iron turned down a bid of £850k from Norwich City in the 2008 January Transfer Window although the club do now find themselves a league lower after being relegated from the Championship last season.

Further comments yesterday from the acting Scunthorpe Chairman,Rex Garton were also provided in the Burnley Express concerning the situation

"Yes, our chairman Steve Wharton has received a telephone call from a representative at Burnley.

"But we have made it clear that we do not want to sell Martin Paterson.

"And to the best of my knowledge, we have received no written offer from Burnley for him.

"We have had to pay more than that (£400,000) to bring Martin here from Stoke.

"Any offer like that would not be worth considering."

"Relegation from the Championship will mean a reduction in league revenue of between £1.5million and £1.75million.

"But we are in a happy situation where we do not have to sell, and are not looking to do so.

"We want to keep our best players here at Glanford Park because we want to have a successful season in League 1."

Come on Burnley if you want this player badly, put in a decent bid and stop pfaffing about

Claim and counter-claim here we go. Always thought we would need to bid more than £400k anyway, so will we give up once again or for once get the man we want by upping the ante?

Ideally we could throw one of our youth strikers in to the deal for a season on loan or something. We do need to bid at least double that though.

i think 500k and macdonald for a season would do it or 800k on his own

According to one of the Scunthorpe forums 600k would do it. They have add ons due to Stoke if he plays so many games or scores so many goals for them, so selling him before they come in to effect would save them a lot of money.

This is a true test for Coyle. If he doesnt get this player, I feel it is going to be a grim Summer. If we cant prise away Paterson by a better offer in the £600k plus region, then I seriously doubt there is enough money sloshing about to attract the right quality of players at the right salary.
