Rumour Mill-Martin Paterson

One Sunday paper this morning has linked the Clarets with Scunthorpe's Northern Ireland International striker, Martin Paterson.

The News of the World suggests Burnley have offered £400,000 for the 21-year old forward.

Martin Paterson started his professional career with his local side Stoke City and spent three years with the club between 2004-2007. During this time he had a loan spell with Grimsby Town during the 2006-7 season.

Paterson was signed by Scunthorpe United manager Nigel Adkins as a replacement for the departed Billy Sharp in the Summer of 2007.

He scored on his full début for the Iron giving the side 1-0 lead against League One side Hartlepool United in the League Cup before his side eventually lost the game 2-1.

Paterson scored 7 goals in 11 starts and this impressive statistic led to the player being called up for the Northern Ireland squad.

In the January window of 2008 Norwich had a £850,000 bid rejected by Scunthorpe so if the rumour is true, £400,000 seems a little light. However with Scunthorpe being relegated to League One they could possibly now be strapped for cash and they might now be tempted by this lower offer.

Young with a bit of pace. Just the type of player we should be looking at.
