Sad News about Gazza!
Former Burnley and England International midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act according to a number of reports in the media.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said:
'Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.'
'The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no-one was injured during the incident.'
Police have now also said he was not in custody and was now receiving medical treatment
The Daily Mail gives a detailed account of what happened referring to a hotel called The Malmaison in Newcastle. Gascoigne is understood to have moved to the Hilton Hotel after being asked to leave the Malmaison in the early hours of Wednesday following an incident.
Gazza was staying at the Malmaison after recovering from an operation on his hip.
For some unknown reason in the early hours of Wednesday morning this week it is alleged he decided to set-off the fire alarms and then threatened a Night Porter after refusing to be evacuated. It is understood he also had a steak knife in his pocket.
Gazza has had a rather troubled history of behaviourial problems but it is always sad to hear stories like this about a player who provided so much pleasure for countless fans at his various clubs and for the National team.
His last job in football was as manager of Kettering but he was sacked in December 2005 after just 39 days in the role.
